Charged for a Subscription Renewal? Which Companies Refund It, and by When

Canceling stops the next renewal, not the one you paid. Which subscriptions refund a renewal, how many days you get, and from what date.

A lot of people assume that canceling a subscription gets back the charge that just hit their card. For most services it doesn’t. Canceling stops the next renewal; the one already charged is a separate question with its own rule.

Netflix, Spotify and Google Play let you keep using what you paid for until the period ends, and stop there. AppleCare+ spells it out: turning off renewal brings “no cancellation refund.” Money comes back only under a refund rule the company wrote, and usually only if you ask.

So an unwanted renewal comes down to three decisions. Who billed you (Apple, Google Play or the company itself) decides whose rule applies. Your service’s window and the date it counts from can be 60 days, 30 days, 3 days, any time or nothing at all. And how you cancel and what gets subtracted can turn a “full refund” into a partial one.

No single deadline fits every subscription. If the company turns you down, your card’s dispute clock is a separate one, covered in the last section.

One subscription renewal charge, two separate questions: canceling stops the next charge, while a refund of the current charge depends on who billed you, the window and its start date, and how you cancel.
One renewal charge, two separate questions: canceling stops the next charge, while getting this one back depends on the company’s own refund rule.

Start With the Biller: Apple, Google Play or the Company Itself

Read the name on the statement line before anything else. If it says Apple or Google Play, the refund request goes to Apple or Google, not to the app’s maker. Don’t assume the app’s own refund window carries over to a store purchase.

Apple takes subscription refund requests at reportaproblem.apple.com: sign in, choose to request a refund, pick the subscription and wait 24 to 48 hours for an update. Apple’s refund page doesn’t publish a day limit, and it doesn’t promise approval.

Google Play takes requests inside Play (Payments & subscriptions, then Budget & order history, then Report a problem). Once more than 48 hours have passed since the purchase, Google’s help page sends you to the app’s developer, which handles refunds under its own policies.

If you signed up through someone else, that party’s rules usually apply. Amazon’s Prime terms say you “may need to contact the third party,” and Norton, SiriusXM or Audible bought inside an app store are canceled in that store.

Refund route by the biller on your statement: Apple goes to reportaproblem.apple.com, Google Play to Play and after 48 hours the developer, a third party or app store to its own rules, and a direct charge to the company's rule.
The biller printed on your statement decides where the refund request goes.

Sixty Days From the Charge: Norton, McAfee and Best Buy Yearly

The longest windows belong to annual antivirus plans and Best Buy’s yearly memberships. Norton refunds each annual renewal payment in full if you ask within 60 days of being charged, counted from the charge, not from the date the old subscription would have expired. On a Norton monthly plan only the first charge qualifies (within 14 days); later monthly renewals don’t.

McAfee’s US FAQ promises a full refund on request within 30 days of the first purchase or 60 days of an auto-renewal. That wording is from McAfee’s US FAQ as archived in December 2025, because the live page couldn’t be loaded on Oct. 27, 2026, so confirm it there before you count on the date. Reach McAfee or Norton through their official support pages, not a phone number from a search result.

Best Buy’s yearly My Best Buy Plus and Total memberships refund the current term in full within 60 days of purchase or of any annual renewal, then prorate by the days left. Either way, Best Buy can subtract the value of member benefits you used and the price of limited-supply items bought in member events, which can shrink the “full” refund a lot.

Monthly Best Buy members get 3 days from each monthly renewal (20 days from the first month). Canceling Total also ends the protection or AppleCare+ plans it provided. The steps for claiming Norton’s 60-day renewal refund and what Best Buy deducts when you cancel a membership each have their own walkthrough.

Renewal refund windows to scale for Norton, McAfee and Best Buy: annual renewals get 60 days, Best Buy monthly renewals 3 days, and Norton monthly renewals none; McAfee wording is from an archived US FAQ.
In this group the annual renewal gets the long window; on monthly plans it shrinks to days or disappears.

Thirty-Day Windows Come With Strings

Microsoft 365 Personal and Family refund the most recent recurring charge if you cancel within 30 days after payment, once per Microsoft account, per subscription product. A second forgotten renewal of the same product isn’t covered, and the US gets no prorated refund. You’ll see whether you qualify during cancellation (Services & subscriptions, then Manage, then Cancel).

Microsoft’s policy doesn’t cover prepaid retail codes, which follow the store’s return policy, and Xbox subscriptions have a separate page that this guide doesn’t cover.

SiriusXM doesn’t refund monthly renewals; canceling at least 24 hours before the renewal date stops the next one. Plans billed longer than monthly work differently: cancel within 30 days of the renewal charge and that period’s fees are eligible for a pro-rata refund, if you ask. The post on what changes when a SiriusXM promo price ends shows where that renewal shows up.

A credit card annual fee is a renewal too. Federal rules require the issuer to send a renewal notice at least 30 days or one billing cycle (whichever is less) before the statement that first charges the fee, saying how and when you can close the account to avoid it.

American Express’s Platinum Card agreement, for example, refunds the fee if you close within 30 days after the Closing Date of the statement where the fee appears (that policy doesn’t apply to a Massachusetts billing address). Other issuers set their own deadline, and your renewal notice or statement says what it is. Closing can also cost you points, which the guide to annual fee refund deadlines and what happens to your points covers.

Three 30-day renewal refund windows with different start dates: Microsoft 365 from the payment, once per account per product; SiriusXM longer-than-monthly plans from the renewal charge; Amex Platinum from the statement Closing Date.

Cancel, Don’t Just Switch Off Renewal

AppleCare+ is where the action you pick decides the money. Turning off renewal lets a monthly or annual plan run to the end of the paid period with no refund. Actually canceling returns a pro-rata share of the unexpired time, or the full payment within 30 days of first buying the plan.

Plans paid in full up front subtract the value of service you’ve used, and the AppleCare+ cancellation and refund guide covers both kinds.

AppleCare+ monthly or annual plan: turning off renewal runs the plan to the end of the paid period with no refund, while canceling returns a pro-rata refund of the unexpired time.
Same AppleCare+ plan, two actions: switching off renewal ends it with no refund, while canceling returns the unexpired time.

Amazon Prime’s 3 Days and Costco’s Any-Time Refund

Amazon Prime’s “3 days” is widely misread as a window after every renewal. Under Amazon’s Prime Terms (last updated May 11, 2021), canceling within 3 business days of signing up or converting from a free trial returns the full fee, minus the value of benefits used in those days. At any other time, the full refund applies only if you made no eligible purchases and used no Prime benefits since your latest Prime charge.

Prime bought through a third party follows that party’s rules, and Prime from a gift or promo code isn’t refundable. Amazon’s terms page couldn’t be loaded on Oct. 27, 2026, so this wording comes from the latest public archive copy (Aug. 10, 2025); check the live page before you ask.

Amazon Prime refund decision flow: canceling within 3 business days of sign-up or a trial conversion returns the fee minus benefits used; at any other time a full refund needs no purchases or benefits used since the latest charge.
Prime’s 3 business days run from sign-up or a trial conversion; after that, a full refund needs no eligible purchases or Prime benefits used since your latest Prime charge.

Costco sits at the generous end: it will “cancel and refund your membership fee at any time if you are dissatisfied.” On an Executive membership, though, any 2% Reward already issued or accrued is subtracted from the upgrade-fee refund, which the post on downgrading Costco Executive for a refund works through.

Services Whose Terms Offer No Renewal Refund

Netflix’s US terms say “Payments are nonrefundable,” with no refunds or credits for partly used periods. Spotify gives none for partial periods unless the law requires it. Audible says you “will not receive a refund of any fees already paid,” and Google Play says past subscriptions “can’t be refunded, with some exceptions.”

That isn’t a promise these companies never refund anything; their terms just don’t offer one. Your lever is timing: cancel before the next billing date, and access runs to the end of what you paid for. Audible members should spend leftover credits first, which is the point of the guide to canceling Audible without losing unused credits.

Planet Fitness doesn’t publish a refund rule for an annual fee once it’s charged. To stop it, your club must receive your request at least 8 days before your club’s annual fee date, which you’ll find in the member portal or your membership agreement. The Planet Fitness annual fee cancellation timing post goes through how to find that date.

The Netflix wording is from the US terms (last updated April 10, 2026) as archived Oct. 1, 2026, because the live page served another country’s version; the Planet Fitness rule is from its FAQ as archived Oct. 12, 2026.

Cancel timing to scale before the next charge for services whose terms offer no renewal refund: Netflix, Spotify, Audible and Google Play before the billing date, SiriusXM monthly 24 hours ahead, Planet Fitness 8 days ahead.
When the terms offer no renewal refund, the date that counts is the one before the next charge.

Put Your Own Deadline on the Calendar

Two dates decide the rest: the charge date (on your card or bank statement, or the company’s receipt) and, for a card annual fee, the statement’s Closing Date. Then add your service’s window from the table.

Renewal refund windows in each company’s published terms, checked Oct. 27, 2026
Service What the terms allow Counts from
Norton annual 60 days, full refund The renewal charge
McAfee (US FAQ, archived) 60 days, full refund The auto-renewal
Best Buy yearly (Plus, Total) 60 days full, then prorated; minus benefits used The renewal purchase
Best Buy monthly 3 days; minus benefits used Each monthly renewal
Microsoft 365 Personal, Family 30 days, once per account per product The payment
SiriusXM, billed longer than monthly 30 days, pro-rata if you ask The renewal charge
Amex Platinum annual fee 30 days to close for a refund Closing Date of the statement with the fee
Other card annual fees Whatever your renewal notice says Per your notice or statement
AppleCare+ monthly, annual Pro-rata when you cancel; none if you only turn off renewal The day you cancel
Costco Any time if dissatisfied; Executive minus 2% Reward No deadline published
Amazon Prime (terms via archive) Full refund only if no purchases or benefits used Your latest Prime charge
Norton monthly, SiriusXM monthly No renewal refund; SiriusXM: cancel 24+ hours ahead The next renewal date
Netflix, Spotify, Audible, Google Play No renewal refund in the terms; cancel ahead The next billing date
Planet Fitness annual fee No published refund; club must receive request 8+ days ahead Your club’s annual fee date

Here’s a hypothetical to show the arithmetic, not a real account: an annual renewal charged on October 20, 2026. A 30-day window from that charge ends November 19, 2026, and a 60-day window ends December 19, 2026. If a card’s annual fee sits on a statement with a Closing Date of October 25, 2026, an Amex-style 30-day rule means closing by November 24, 2026.

Hypothetical calendar: a renewal charged October 20, 2026 has a 30-day window ending November 19 and a 60-day window ending December 19; a card statement closing October 25 means closing by November 24.
Example dates only: one hypothetical October 20 charge and its 30- and 60-day ends, plus a card statement closing October 25.

Ask before your date, and in writing where the company allows it. A request like this fits most of the windows above:

“I’m writing about the renewal of [plan] charged on [date]. I’d like to cancel the subscription, not just turn off auto-renew, and request a refund of that charge. Your terms allow a refund within [window], and I’m inside it. Please confirm the cancellation and the refund amount in writing.”

When the Company Says No or Doesn’t Answer

The company’s refund window and your card’s dispute clock are separate. A billing dispute with your card issuer or bank has its own deadline: 60 days after the statement that first shows the charge, and your notice has to arrive by then. The guide to disputing a charge after canceling and stopping the next one walks through that route.

AppleCare+ is the exception to plan around: its terms treat a chargeback as a request to cancel with no refund, so cancel the plan through Apple instead.

No federal rule currently guarantees a subscription refund or easy cancellation (the FTC’s 2024 click-to-cancel amendments were vacated), though some states have their own auto-renewal laws.

My rule of thumb is to write down the charge date the day an unwanted renewal shows up, not the date the old plan would have expired. The windows above that have a deadline count from a charge, a renewal purchase or a statement Closing Date, and none of them from an expiration date. With that date written down, how many days do you actually have left?
